Considering the need to conserve Mangalavanam, described as the green lungs of Kochi city, the Mangalavanam Samrakshana Samithi has renewed its call for creating a buffer zone for the bird sanctuary.
Chairman of the Samithi and MLA Hibi Eden said that he would push for getting the buffer zone declared though there was no progress on the 2012 proposal by the State Department of Forests.
The proposal was to get government lands surrounding the bird sanctuary declared as the buffer zone. The Railways, the Bharat Petroleum Corporation and the Kerala State Housing Board have land close to the bird reserve, he said.
A senior official of the Department of Forests said that the Union government had not responded to the proposal in 2012 for creating the buffer zone but underlined the importance of the buffer zone considering that the bird reserve comprised a small area of about 2.74 hectares.
Another official of the department said that the number of migratory birds at the sanctuary had considerably decreased over the years.
